Befriending your body

8 Week Virtual Program

WELCOME

The Befriending Your Body Program is a unique trauma-informed 8-week Somatic Self-Compassion Recovery Program for anyone who struggles with an eating disorder, disordered eating, and/or body image concerns.

If you are looking for a new and unique approach to rediscovering a relationship with your body, with food, and especially with yourself, this program is for you.

a new & unique approach

  • This program will offer you a new view on recovery that is unique, integrative, and holistic to help you develop the respectful and trusting relationship with your body, food, and self that you have been searching for.

  • It is the first of its kind, grounded in the Polyvagal Theory and the evidenced-based practices of Interoceptive Awareness (IA), self-compassion, and mindfulness; along with my expertise in somatic psychotherapy and eating disorder treatment, and over 30 years of clinical knowledge.

  • Different from a support group or therapy group, the BFYB Program is a psycho-educational program that will teach you a great deal about your brain, nervous system, and the inner communication of your body that has been lost along the way. Therefore, we are not interested in stories, rather we are interested in sharing the experience of the skills and practices that are learned in the moment.

  • Each program is kept small (no more than 15 participants). This way, we can keep it a safe and connected space with each other.

It is through the sharing of in-the-moment experience that common humanity and embodiment are born, as we support one another in our human path of growth. From the start, we understand “this is hard,” and through compassion we learn how to be with it.

“I am most interested in helping people to achieve long-lasting recovery, healing & growth.”

— DR. ANN SAFFI BIASETTI, ORIGINATOR OF THE BEFRIENDING YOUR BODY PROGRAM & PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

The BFYB Program was born from my doctoral research, a qualitative, Constructivist Grounded Theory, which explored the role self-compassion played in sustaining recovery. My research turned into my book, Befriending Your Body: A Self-Compassionate Approach to Freeing Yourself From Disordered Eating. After my book was released I started receiving emails and messages from people informing me that they were joining in with others, such as friends, their therapist, or dietitian to “do” the book together. It immediately struck me that the book had a relational quality to it and that this work needed to be done with others. That really is no surprise as that is the nature of self-compassion. It is about re-connecting with what has been lost and finding common humanity with others in shared experience to heal.

So I quickly gathered together ideas, my book, and a research assistant; and I embarked on a year-long pilot study on the program, where I explored—through both quantitative and qualitative data collection—behavioral change, changes in interoceptive awareness, and changes in self-compassion in those that participated in the program. I have since gathered this together, including the rich feedback of experience that I received, and turned it into the 8-week virtual program. Since then, I have lead hundreds of people through the BFYB program and I continue to be amazed and in awe with the honesty and vulnerability shared and the growth experienced as we embark on learning a “new language” together: the language of your body.

the value

Through this program, you will:

  • Gain knowledge about the internal workings of your body and nervous system.

  • Learn how internal knowledge assists you in regulating the tough emotions—such as, anxiety, fear and shame—that block recovery and keep you stuck.

  • Learn how the powerful skills and practice of self-compassion can help soothe the toughest moments within your nervous system, as well as your emotions and thoughts, to keep you moving forward.

  • Discover Interoceptive Awareness, the “new language” about your body from the inside out which, in turn, helps you to grow true self-care and intuitive knowledge.

  • Discover an embodied understanding of emotion regulation.

  • Gain greater self-knowledge, self-discovery, and self-connection.

  • Gain greater self-kindness towards yourself and your body.

What to Expect

My book, Befriending Your Body: A Self-Compassionate Approach to Freeing Yourself From Disordered Eating is the companion book to the program. Please purchase the book ahead of time and plan to read a chapter a week along with the program.

Each week we will begin with a somatic practice and my teaching on the primary principles of each phase of recovery as we develop this new body language and skills. There will be additional self-reflective questions to build embodiment and self-awareness to support you in moving forward in your growth.

Please note: the program is much different than the book, and much of what you will learn is dependent upon you reading the coinciding chapter week to week.

It’s never too late to learn how to be kinder to yourself and your body.
